A New Take on Homemaking and Motherhood

For my final project for my Anthropology 445 class, I chose to focus on something that I am active participant of.  4 weeks from today, I am expecting the biggest (literally and figuratively) gift in my life.  My first baby is about to join our little family and my husband and I are really excited about this.  The different pages and social media sites available for free in the internet has made my survival on my 36 week journey through pregnancy and my 10 months of marriage possible.  On that short time I found myself completely dependent on these pages and sites, sometimes I even think that without it I seriously would not be able to carry the demands and stresses of the kind of life that I have; a student, part-time worker, wife, and a soon-to-be mom.  For my final project I paid special attention on the four different tools that I use as homemaker and as soon-to-be mom; Pinterest, Cooking Blogs, Facebook and Babycenter.com.

Pinterest, Cooking Blogs and Facebook go hand in hand on my pursuit to improve my homemaking skills.  Before I got married like most women these days, I do not have any idea of how to cook a satisfying meal.  I know how to cook a couple of dishes that we use to eat back home so before I got married I thought I’ll somehow survive but I was wrong.  My husband is from Tahiti and the foods that we have and the way that we prepare them is completely different from what they enjoy back home.  It’s not that he complains to me about the food but there’s just a feeling when I look at him when we eat that sometimes he’s not satisfied with what he is eating.  Pinterest, Cooking Blogs and Facebook have helped me create meals that I could serve my husband.  Browsing through these three tools helped me find recipes which I can copy and try at home.  Through these tools, I do not need to go to the library and check out cooking books which offers not only complicated recipes but expensive as well.  With these three tools I could just type whatever ingredients available at home and voila the recipe is right there in front of me.  Not only did these three tools helped me with my cooking skills but it also helped me in finding ways to clean and maintain our apartment and decorate it in less expensive ways.  Here are some examples of the things that I find on these three tools.

www.joyofbaking.com offers new but easy methods to baking

Pinterest offers recipes that have been tried by different moms and wifes from all social level

Babycenter.com on the other hand offers different suggestions and lesson regarding pregnancy, what to do and what to expect during these critical months of baby's life.  Oftentimes babycenter.com answers my questions more that my own doctor.  It also offers childbirth classes online for free compared to the $30 class they offer in the hospital.

I can totally say that these four tools are a huge help for my pursuit of being a homemaker and a mother.  It drives me away from the stuckedness of copying what my mom or my mom's mom have done through their lifetime.  Through my use of these tools I am able to create and choose my own style of being a homemaker and a mother.  I am not doomed to be a boring mom and wife but through these things I can in a few strokes of my fingers create magic in our humble home.  Of course as with all technological tools and devices I also need to pay extra attention on the amount of time I spend in using these things because I may not notice that I am spending more time on it than on my real life as a homemaker and a mother.  Sometimes I also tend to rationalize that it is for our family anyway which can also be dangerous.  This final project has helped me to look on where I really am in terms of homemaking and motherhood and it has caused me to step back a little and see the bigger picture of what I doing.
